Dress code is shit.
While walking to our next class, a conversation was brought up between my friends and I. The topic was dress code. My friend today was wearing a tank top, and I asked her, "Aren't you going to get dress code?". she looked at me and said, "I've been wearing this shirt for the past 3 years, I pass by the security guards and they haven't said anything. Half of the girls in this school wear them. So, It's not considered dress code". I gave her a rather puzzled look. More like a "are you serious?". I then reflected back into the time in which I did get dress code, for wearing a tank-top like shirt which covered more than a regular tank top.
So you're telling me its okay to wear this:
But not this:
I mean... right?
When I arrived to school, I was wearing a shirt similar to the red one, I went pass the entrance, and as soon as I did, I was stopped by one of the security guards. I thought I wasn't wearing my I.D card, since they always check it when you enter school, So I looked down and I did have it on. "Do you have a jacket?" the security guard asked me. "It's like 80, why do I need a jacket?" I questioned him. "You're not supposed to be wearing that shirt, it's inappropriate" I couldn't help but laugh internally. Inappropriate? I then asked him why it was considered 'inappropriate', he replied that my shoulders were 'distracting' and I was showing 'way too much'. Excuse you. Last time I checked my shoulders weren't a distraction. Nothing less, caused a sex appeal.
After that, I had enough. It was around 7:25 in the morning, and I wasn't trying to be late to class. So, I lied about having a jacket and walked away. At this point I was pretty mad, I was a min or two late to class. I told the people in my group about the confrontation I had. They all pretty much agreed with me. I asked several of the boys in the class of what they thought about my shirt, they all said, "It's just a shirt. I see nothing wrong with it". Yeah, that certainly confirms that my shoulders are a distraction.
Next time I am stopped by one of the campus' security guards for what I'm wearing, I am going to speak the truth. Even if I get suspended for it. If I had a penny for every time I gave my opinion, and was threatened to be sent to the principle/severely punished, I'd be billionaire.
This is why young people are afraid to stand up to authority. YOU have a voice. USE IT! If they say you can't wear a shirt because "it's distracting", wear it the next day to prove a point.
